The Montreal Protocol, adopted by the United States EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), called for the phase-out of substances that deplete the Ozone Layer. Unfortunately, Freon (or R22, an HCFC) is one such substance. In order to meet the EPA’s strict rules for this phase-out, production of Freon has been dramatically cut. Such cuts have caused the price of Freon to skyrocket.
“How does this affect me?” Good question. The most common way it will affect you is in A/C repairs. If you have a leaky A/C, it may cost a few hundred bucks to send someone out just to add Freon. The next cut level for the production of HCFC’s goes into effect on January 1, 2015. Expect prices to go up again…
