Improving Indoor Air Quality

If you live in San Antonio, you know we deal with several allergy related airborne pollutants. Tenants and homeowners want to live in a healthy and comfortable environment. When the indoor air quality is poor, you risk sick and an unhappy family who may be suffering from headaches, allergies, and other illnesses.

Here are 10 ways to improve indoor air quality:

  1. Maintain HVAC maintenance. HVAC systems are a prominent airflow provider and can fail to do so when they’re not properly maintained. New filters, clean coils, and repaired parts will help the system function smoothly.  Call an HVAC company or Pyramis Company, a reliable San Antonio property management firm.
  2. Use green certified products. Materials and products with off-gas volatile organic compound (VOCs) produce problematic chemicals or odors. Purchase products and materials with independent, third-party green certification.
  3. Implement a green cleaning plan. Unhealthy cleaning chemicals found in standard products can contaminate spaces and cause an increase in asthma symptoms by 50 percent. Implementing green cleaning products and programs will improve indoor air quality.
  4. Filter the air. Dust, pollen, mold, and bacteria travel freely through the air. An air filter will remove these airborne components and improve air quality.
  5. Use outdoor air dilution. Most indoor air is recirculated and generated mechanically which can hinder air quality. Outdoor air will dilute or purify it by exchanging room air with less concentrated air from outside.
  6. Prevent and eliminate mold. Dust can accumulate into a hazardous mold which can cause respiratory problems and allergic reactions.
  7. Control interior temperatures. Residents want to live in an environment with comfortable temperatures. Controlling interior temperatures based on outdoor conditions and the number of occupants will provide better indoor air quality.
  8. Monitor air quality. Pollutants are oftentimes found in the air and they can create health issues.
  9. Control dust. Indoor dust is typically the cause of allergies and asthma illnesses. Filters on vacuums, air filters and any area that requires high moisture are necessary to improve indoor air quality.
  10. Control HVAC microbial growth. An accumulation of excessive moisture trapped in an HVAC system can produce unhealthy bacteria growth and hazardous indoor air quality. Cleaning your HVAC’s coils will eliminate this problem to improve the air flow from the system.
